Quail Egg Study
A small egg, marked like a world of its own. Familiar in the hand, but strange when looked at closely.
The fascination with quail eggs often begins in simple places. A tray at the supermarket, a box opened at home, several small shells gathered together. From a distance, they seem to follow the same pattern. But once looked at closely, each egg becomes different. Some markings are dense and dark, some are soft and scattered, some gather around the curve like a small storm moving across the shell.
There is something almost galactic in the surface. The egg becomes the body of a small universe, with speckles sitting like worlds across it. This is not a perfect or decorative pattern. It feels accidental, but complete. That tension is what makes the quail egg interesting to ode. A form that is simple in outline, but full of movement when read through its surface.

Quail eggs are known for their varied shell markings. The pattern can help break the outline of the egg, allowing it to sit less visibly against certain natural surfaces. What appears decorative to the eye can also act as a form of protection. The egg has long been linked to ideas of origin and beginning. In this study, that meaning stays close to the physical form: a shell, an interior, and a surface that keeps something unseen.
What stayed with us was the order of the workshop. It was small, but the workflow was clear. One person handled the moulds, another cleaned the surface, while Li Chunqi returned to the egg with paint, tools, and small corrections. The making did not feel staged for us. It felt practiced. That control is part of
what Ab Ovo carries. The object is not made to look perfectly machine-made. You can still see the hand in the painted speckles, the surface, and the small differences between each piece. But those differences feel natural, not unfinished. They give the egg its character without taking away from the form.
